4 tips for ending writer's block

By |

Writing about not being able to write is a strange thing.

But it happens to the best of us: we've all been taunted and bullied by the evil blank white page or screen.

Even if you're not a copywriter by trade, you might have experienced the panic induced by writer's block.

To help you in your time of need, here are 4 quick tips for ending writer's block that will have you hammering away at your keyboard in no time:

Just Start Typing

Start hitting the keys even if what comes out at first is absolute jibberish or is completely off topic.

Very often the mere act of typing or writing will free you from writer's block.

You remember when your high school or college professor gave you "freewriting" exercises? Now is the time to let go and let language take over--you'll eventually get where you want to go. When you have a block, you just might need to take a more circuitous route to your final draft, that's all.

Dictate

If freewriting doesn't work, try recording yourself speaking about your topic. Removing yourself from fear triggers (keyboard, computer screen, laptop, etc.) can help you remove whatever bottleneck is in the way.

Just talk through it, then listen and transcribe what you recorded into your document. Talking through it and then typing the results will help you escape writer's block limbo.

No First Draft is Perfect

If you find yourself typing for a few seconds and then deleting your words immediately take a break. Remind yourself that no first draft in the history of language has been perfect.

There is a drafting, editing and revision process for a reason--nearly all first drafts are 50% trash.

Let the garbage writing flow. Embrace imperfection. And you'll soon be free and writing away.

Change Your Scene

Get out of your home office, your cube, the conference room or wherever you normally work.

Hit the coffee shop. Get outside. Sit on the porch or a park bench.

Sometimes a simple change of environment can get the words flowing freely again. Don't be afraid to change it up--you never know what will release a torrent of words.

We hope these 4 tips get you going. Only you can free yourself from writer's block, but we certainly can help you create content that attracts customers to your business.
